Pat, Durham was "built on tobacco money", but that industry is shriveling up. Several cigarette factories which had been a big part of industry here have closed their doors. Many of the old tobacco warehouses have been converted to condos, restaurants, and offices, and it's really a beautiful area now and a big boost to downtown. So don't buy stock in the tobacco industry. Folks who still smoke are beginning to look like dinosaurs!
As I said to Pat, up above, many of the old tobacco warehouses have been converted to condos, restaurants, and offices. There's even a mini-version of the "riverwalk" with a waterway running through the area pictured above. It's a beautiful area now and a big boost to downtown.
Sue, we were in Brevard, NC today and passed by the Historic Johnson Farm. We didn't go to it, but I happened to have an LTE signal and looked it up. Coincidentally, it was once a tobacco farm. Thanks for hosting the #WW fun on Tuesday. I accidentally published mine a day early. lol So, you're welcome to join my linky party! ;)
I really need to head to Durham. I know that Duke University was Trinity College a long time ago and that the tobacco giant James Duke gave his money to the Trinity when he died and it became Duke University.
It's a sign of the times when we view something with the word 'tobacco' in it with the dissonance of it and the word University. Thanks Sue, as always for your linky! Denyse
