A Berlin Wall memorial
On a recent vacation to the midwest, we strolled a local park in Rapid City, South Dakota and were surprised to see a section which contained remnants of the Berlin Wall along with a lot of historical information that reminded us of some of the history we lived through. It now seems rather hard to understand. It was a good refresher.

Pieces of the Wall now sit in museums around the world, reminding us that no wall lasts forever.
ReplyDeletewow I'm amazed it's there but maybe most countries should have a piece of it too as a constant reminder to us.
ReplyDeleteIt's an amazing history- can you imagine your life changed pretty much overnight, just based on your street location? And yet we're watching it begin to happen in a number of countries around the world again. Humans don't learn much.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that segments of the wall are now many different places. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Berlin Wall memorial looks amazing, Great post and photos.
ReplyDeleteA piece of history. Thanks for sharing this with us.
ReplyDeleteI remember standing next to that when it was there and the east Germans looking over at you mind you the scariest thing was when I drove from West germane to West Berlin. Watchtowers with Machine guns are not something you would expect to see.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting memorial.
ReplyDeleteI remember when that wall came down. Sometimes good things happen.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing about this, Sue. Amazing piece of history that should never be forgotten.
ReplyDeleteOn a separate but related note, I have a piece of the Berlin Wall in a block of Lucite that was gifted to me years ago.
Indeed a good reminder! Thank you for this subject!
ReplyDeleteHappy WW and a fine week! ❤️😘

I have been in Rapid city but a long time ago in 71 ! The remains of the wall I saw in Berlin in 2018, there was not much left, after the fall of the wall people stormed there to get a piece of this "wall of shame" The original signs were still there and a piece of the wall with the graffiti of that time was left. Otherwise you could follow a metal trace in the streets were the wall was.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to have a memorial to what happened. Unfortunately it does seem to be happening again in various places.
ReplyDeleteThat is something that somebody arranged for the sections of the wall to be removed and shipped to South Dakota. Sometimes all it takes is one person to make something happen.
ReplyDeleteMy parents were in Berlin during the time the wall was coming down. They went to it and people were hammering away at it to get chips as souvenirs so dad borrowed a hammer and a bunch of chips. He gave me one and I have no idea where it is.
we have remnants in Brussels as well.
ReplyDeleteAll that comes to mind is... wow!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for this post!!
