Capharnaum

The darker stones below were from a synagogue standing during Jesus' time.
A 2-story synagogue was built on top of the original foundation. Capharnaum was abandoned in the 11th century, then rediscovered in 1838.

The home of Simon Peter: Jesus would have stayed here frequently.

  11. Beyond amazing that those stones are so old and that the village was rediscovered 600 years later. And the ruins of St. Peter's house, the little Catholic girl in me is giddy? Very cool.

  13. thank you for taking us to this amazing historical place that I may never visit. Amazing the history that goes back so far, and that they built new buildings on top of existing foundations.

    1. It was moving and meaningful and a whole lot of adjectives that don't do the experience justice.

    1. It is mentioned in the New Testament, but is not a "working city" now. There are some archeologists who have explored the ruins there, and there are some monks who live on site to preserve and protect it. But it has been many years since it was a city in which people lived and worked.
