Capharnaum





The darker stones below were from a synagogue standing during Jesus' time.
A 2-story synagogue was built on top of the original foundation. Capharnaum was abandoned in the 11th century, then rediscovered in 1838.



The home of Simon Peter: Jesus would have stayed here frequently.

    Beyond amazing that those stones are so old and that the village was rediscovered 600 years later. And the ruins of St. Peter's house, the little Catholic girl in me is giddy? Very cool.

    I never heard of Caphernaum before. Is it currently inhabited or is it just an historical site?

      It is mentioned in the New Testament, but is not a "working city" now. There are some archeologists who have explored the ruins there, and there are some monks who live on site to preserve and protect it. But it has been many years since it was a city in which people lived and worked.
