The walls of San Juan
One of the fascinating features of the old city of San Juan is the wall which once completely surrounded it. Spanish troops built forts in San Juan beginning in 1539 with a tower at
El Morro and La Fortaleza. The majority of construction took place from the
1760's-1780's. Today it is still possible to walk between the two forts on a beautiful pathway overlooking the sea.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter has visited Old San Juan a couple times and she also found this historic area of Puerto Rico fascinating. I find that fact that there is still talk about "building walls" in our day and age disconcerting.
I hope you received many donations last week and was pleased to add mine to the group in memory of my friend's son who passed away from lymphoma. Praying for the young woman your profiled in your post. Please keep us up to date on her progress.

ReplyDeleteSue, I love seeing photos of such history based on buildings of the past. In Australia, only settled in 1778 we have a long and rich past of Aboriginal heritage but 'buildings' as such have only been around for this long. Denyse

ReplyDeleteThese pictures of fort resemble the ones here in India -in Goa! Goa was under Portuguese rule for few hundred years. Is there any Portuguese connection in San Juan too?

ReplyDeleteIt has been at least 25 years since I went to San Juan and visited Old San Juan and then visited all of those precious vintage structures all painted in beautiful pastel colors. I still have two picture boxes with a butterfly in each I bought at an art gallery there. Your photos are gorgeous and brought back so many memories. Maybe the sieve in my brain has not let out as much gray matter as I was thinking it had. Awesome post. Happy Weekend.

Wow, I think we underestimate our predecessors ...this is amazing architecture and it has lasted forever. What we build today not only doesn't have the style, it probably lacks longevity. This is awesome ...
