An update on Dave

These are a few photos of my husband, Dave, the love of my life, my friend, my helpmate, my advisor, my protector. We each served in these roles for each other. Our 50th wedding anniversary is upcoming on June 3, 2022.

Dave refused to get a covid vaccine despite a health history that put him at high risk. I chose to be vaccinated and boostered to protect us both. I also made many other life adjustments to try to protect him; many of these he found to be annoying. I wore my mask. He wore these when they were required by mandate or store policy, but he left his nose uncovered.

Dave came down with a "cold", which I caught two days later. He refused to seek medical advice or testing. He continued to protest when he deteriorated and I called for an ambulance to transport him to the emergency department.

He tested positive for covid, and so did I. I wasn't allowed to see him in ICU until about 4 hours before his death. I thank God I was able to be with him, that we were able to tell each other that we loved each other, and that I was able to surround him with love and prayer as he passed from this life to the next.

I have now completely recovered from covid.

I go to plan his funeral today.

Please, get your vaccines and get a booster when you are eligible. Take steps to protect yourself and others. I know the news reports can be confusing and seem to change daily, but you CAN take steps to help yourself and others stay healthy or mitigate the chances of severe disease and death.

Do it for yourself.

Do it for those you love.

Do it for me.

  6. Sue, my heart truly breaks for you! I am so sorry your have lost Dave to this horrible virus. I know many who have passed away from it--even a few elder people who were vaccinated--it is so very cruel that older people are especially susceptible to it and sometimes our immune systems are too weak to fight it. Your post is a warning to all to take it seriously and to vaccinate, get a booster when advised, and even then wear a mask and take precautions if one is over 65. Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

  8. I feel your sorry and pain. I'm sending you warm mental hugs through the wires. My sister celebrated her 50th anniversary with her ill husband 3 years ago. He died 2 weeks later. She's better than she was but the hole from the loss of her partner will always be empty. We both have you in our prayers.

  37. Oh, so sad to read. Made me cry as I know how hard it is to lose the love of your life. My heart is breaking for you because to be married that long, they are half of you that will be deeply missed. Yes, I got my shots early on, and recently the booster. My daughter is a Nurse, and some just don't realize how it affects everyone differntly. She works in with the Covid patients, and most are unvaccinated by a much greater percentage than those that chose to get the vaccines. Will keep you in my prayers.

  45. Dear Sue,

    My heartfelt condolences.
You have shared deep, loving posts about Dave in the past and its heart-breaking to see how Covid got him. I feel you. Early last year this time, my only brother as young as 55 succumbed to Covid. We didn't have vaccines by then.

Praying for Dave to rest peacefully cradled in almighty's caring arms.
Love, big hugs and strength to you.

  48. So sorry for your loss but thank you for sharing this. If it helps just one person to make the right choice and get their vaccine then at least a tiny bit of good has come from it happening
